An aspect ratio changer for any video in Chrome

Browsers play a video in the shape it was delivered, with no setting to change it. UltraFill adds that missing control to Google Chrome: tell it what format the movie really is, choose how to fit it to your screen, and adjust the frame live on any page with a video.

4:3 as delivered: 44.2% black
Changed to fill: 0% black
A 4:3 video on a 3440×1440 monitor, before and after changing how it fills the screen. Amber is the original shape, orange is stretched.

What an aspect ratio changer does

Every video has a shape, written as width to height: 4:3 for old TV, 16:9 (1.78) for most online video, 1.85 and 2.39 for cinema. Your screen has a shape too, and on a 21:9 or 32:9 monitor it rarely matches. An aspect ratio changer does two things. First, it tells the player what the real picture inside the video is, so black bars baked into the file can be removed. Second, it decides how that picture is fitted to the screen: cut to fit, stretched, or a mix.

Or choose Auto. On sites that do not protect their video, auto bars reads the picture, finds the black bars and picks the format for you. Press Alt + B to run it. On protected services such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and HBO Max, the browser hides the frames from extensions, so you choose the format by hand. The black bars on 21:9 guide explains which format to pick.

How to change the aspect ratio of a video

  1. Add UltraFill to Google Chrome on Windows or macOS.
  2. Open any page with a video. It does not need to be full screen, but full screen shows the effect best.
  3. Hover over the top of the video and click the UltraFill button, or press Alt + U (Option + U on a Mac).
  4. In the Screen tab, choose the movie format or leave it on Auto.
  5. Click Fill the screen (Alt + Z) and choose crop or stretch. With PRO you can also choose elastic stretch.

More than the ratio: zoom, framing, rotate and flip

All of this is free, together with the color and light sliders, themes and 10 languages. For a closer look at crop versus stretch, read stretch a video to fill the screen.

Works on any site, stays on your computer

UltraFill works with the standard HTML5 video element, so it runs on video sites, streaming services, news pages, course platforms and your own files opened in Chrome. Everything is computed live in your browser. There is no account, and nothing about what you watch is collected or sent anywhere. With PRO, the extension only checks your license key with our payment partner.

Questions

Can I change the aspect ratio of any video in Chrome?

Yes, on any page that plays a standard HTML5 video. On protected services you pick the format by hand, because the browser hides the frames from extensions.

What does Auto do?

On unprotected video, auto bars looks at the picture, finds black bars baked into the file and sets the format for you. You can run it any time with Alt + B.

Can I rotate a sideways video?

Yes. Rotate turns the picture by 90° and keeps it centered on the screen, and flip mirrors it. Both are free.

Do I need an account?

No. Install the extension and use it. No sign-up, no e-mail and no data collected.

What does PRO add?

Elastic stretch, picture styles and film looks, sharpness, denoise, sound tools, title profiles, custom shortcuts and more. PRO starts with a 7-day trial the first time you use a PRO feature, with no card.
